Alternative to Readwise Reader

Readwise for Reading. Web2MD for AI Handoff.

Readwise Reader is excellent if reading + highlighting is the workflow. Web2MD is for the other workflow — turn the page into Markdown and feed it to an AI right now, without saving it for later. Different tools for different moments.

Why people are leaving Readwise Reader

Readwise Reader is $9.99/mo minimum — there is no free tier for the reader app.

Readwise pricing

No send-to-AI button — you copy highlights manually into ChatGPT/Claude.

Sync to Obsidian is highlights-only by default — not full article Markdown.

Optimized for "save and read later," not "ship to AI right now."

Why switch to Web2MD

Different jobs — keep both

If you read and annotate a lot, Readwise Reader is irreplaceable for that workflow. Web2MD is the missing piece when you want clean Markdown of a page going into Claude or Cursor right now. Most heavy users have both.

AI handoff is the gap

Readwise has no concept of "send this article to ChatGPT." Web2MD's one-click handoff to ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini/DeepSeek/Perplexity is the feature Readwise users typically ask for and don't get.

Free tier vs paid-only

Readwise Reader is paid-only. Web2MD has a free tier (3 conversions/day, no signup) so you can use it for the AI handoff cases without doubling your subscription cost.

Common questions

Should I switch from Readwise to Web2MD?

Probably not — different jobs. If your workflow is read + highlight + save, stay with Readwise. Add Web2MD for the "send this page to Claude" moments.

Does Web2MD have highlights?

Web2MD outputs the full article as Markdown. You highlight in Obsidian/Notion/your editor after pasting. For inline highlighting during reading, Readwise is the right tool.

Can I sync Web2MD output to Readwise?

Web2MD outputs to clipboard, download, or directly to ChatGPT/Claude. Readwise doesn't have an inbound API for arbitrary Markdown; the workaround is to save to Obsidian (which Readwise reads from).
