Alternative to SingleFile

SingleFile Saves the Page. Web2MD Distills It.

SingleFile is the gold standard for "preserve the page exactly as it looks." Web2MD is for the other half of the workflow — strip the noise, produce Markdown that paste-survives Claude or saves cleanly into Obsidian. Most power users have both pinned.

Get clean Markdown

Why people are leaving SingleFile

Drawn from GitHub issues, Reddit threads, and Chrome Web Store reviews.

SingleFile output is HTML — not pasteable into ChatGPT, Claude, or any Markdown-based notebook.

A typical SingleFile capture is 2-5MB of inlined CSS, fonts, and base64 images. Too heavy for AI context windows.

No bulk export, no queue, no send-to-AI workflow.

You still have to convert HTML → Markdown manually with a separate tool to use it with AI.

Why switch to Web2MD

Different jobs — keep both

If you need to archive a page exactly as it appears (legal, evidence, research provenance), SingleFile is irreplaceable. If you need clean Markdown for AI tools or notes, that is what Web2MD does. The choice is "which destination," not "which tool."

Web2MD is the AI complement

A common workflow: SingleFile saves the canonical archive for your records. Web2MD produces the working Markdown copy you paste into Claude, Cursor, or your vault. The two never overlap.

Smarter extractors

For sites like Reddit, X, Stack Overflow, Wikipedia, arXiv, Web2MD has dedicated extractors that produce cleaner Markdown than running an HTML-to-Markdown converter on a SingleFile archive.

Common questions

Should I use SingleFile or Web2MD?

Use SingleFile to archive. Use Web2MD to convert. They solve different problems. Most heavy clippers have both installed.

Can I convert a SingleFile HTML archive into Markdown with Web2MD?

Open the .html file in a Chrome tab and run Web2MD on it. The result is the same as if you had captured the live page — clean Markdown without inlined CSS.

Why is Web2MD smaller than SingleFile output?

SingleFile inlines every image, font, and CSS file as base64. Web2MD outputs plain Markdown with image URLs. The size difference is typically 100x.
