Webpage to Markdown for RAG and AI Engineers
Convert public, JavaScript-rendered, and authenticated webpages into structured Markdown for RAG ingestion, agent context, evaluation sets, and source-grounded AI workflows.
The short answer
Use Web2MD when a RAG pipeline or AI agent needs the readable content of a webpage rather than its navigation, ads, cookie banners, and raw HTML. Public URLs can use the REST API or hosted MCP. Pages that require your login or browser rendering can use Agent Bridge through your existing Chrome session.
Why this workflow is different
A retrieval pipeline cannot answer reliably when its source documents are menu-heavy HTML, empty client-rendered shells, or screenshots without document structure. The useful intermediate format is deterministic Markdown with headings, tables, lists, code blocks, links, and source metadata preserved before chunking or embedding.
Typical inputs
- •Public documentation, articles, GitHub pages, and knowledge-base URLs
- •JavaScript-rendered pages that return an incomplete server-side response
- •Authenticated pages the operator is already authorized to view
- •URL batches for evaluation corpora or recurring research jobs
Useful outcomes
- ✓Clean Markdown ready for chunking, embedding, reranking, or prompt context
- ✓Source URLs and link structure retained for citations and audit trails
- ✓A consistent conversion path across REST API, hosted MCP, and local Agent Bridge
- ✓Lower prompt noise than sending raw page HTML to a model
A practical workflow
- 1
Choose the fetch path
Use the REST API or hosted MCP for ordinary public URLs. Use Agent Bridge when the page needs your signed-in browser or client-side rendering.
- 2
Convert to structured Markdown
Web2MD removes repeated interface chrome while preserving headings, tables, lists, code, and useful links.
- 3
Validate before indexing
Check the title, source URL, section boundaries, and critical tables before splitting the document into chunks.
- 4
Store provenance with every chunk
Keep the canonical URL and document metadata beside embeddings so generated answers can point back to evidence.
Where it is useful
RAG ingestion
Normalize documentation and knowledge-base pages before applying your own chunking, embedding, metadata, and retention policies.
Agent research
Let an MCP-compatible agent request a URL and receive readable Markdown instead of guessing from a screenshot or an incomplete fetch.
Evaluation datasets
Capture the same pages in a stable text representation so retrieval and answer-quality changes can be compared over time.
Authenticated operations knowledge
Use Agent Bridge for pages your organization already has permission to access without sending account credentials to a hosted scraper.

Frequently asked questions
Should a RAG pipeline store HTML or Markdown?
Store the original source when required for audit or reprocessing, but use cleaned Markdown as the retrieval document when headings, lists, tables, links, and code are important. It is easier to chunk and contains less navigation noise than raw HTML.
Can Web2MD convert a list of URLs?
Yes. The batch API accepts up to 50 URLs per request, and Agent Bridge provides agent_batch_convert for sequential conversion through Chrome.
How do I convert a page that requires login?
Use Agent Bridge with the Web2MD extension in a Chrome session where you are already signed in and authorized to view the page. It does not bypass authentication.
Does Web2MD create embeddings?
No. Web2MD produces structured Markdown and metadata. Your pipeline remains responsible for chunking, embeddings, indexing, retrieval, and retention.
