Excel to Markdown

Turn spreadsheets into Markdown tables — every sheet, in order, no upload.

How to convert a spreadsheet to Markdown

  1. Drop an .xlsx, .xls, or .csv file onto the converter. Parsing happens in your browser.
  2. Each sheet becomes its own section with the sheet name as a heading, so a multi-sheet workbook stays navigable instead of merging into one wall of rows.
  3. Paste the tables into ChatGPT or Claude and ask questions about the data directly.

Why convert Excel to Markdown?

Pasting spreadsheet cells into a chat box produces tab-separated text with no column alignment. The model can often still read it, but it loses which row is a header and where one table ends and the next begins — and that is exactly the structure your question depends on.

A Markdown table states the header row explicitly. For a workbook with several sheets, section headings also tell the model which table it is looking at, so you can ask about one sheet without it blending in numbers from another.

Excel to Markdown FAQ

Does it handle multi-sheet workbooks?

Yes. Each sheet becomes a section titled with the sheet name. Single-sheet files and CSVs skip the heading, since one extra level of nesting for a single table adds nothing.

Are formulas converted or just their results?

The computed values are what come through, not the formula text. That is usually what you want for analysis — the model reasons about the numbers, not the spreadsheet mechanics.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. The file is parsed locally in your browser, which is why this works on financial or internal data you would not paste into an online tool.

What about very large spreadsheets?

Thousands of rows will exceed most context windows once converted. Filter to the rows that matter before converting, or convert one sheet at a time.
